Public Drinking Water

The department's Public Drinking Water Branch is responsible for ensuring Missouri's public water systems provide safe drinking water to every resident and visitor in the state. To do this, the branch issues permits to ensure new and existing public water systems understand and comply with all applicable provisions of federal and state environmental laws and regulations.

The branch provides guidance and technical assistance to public water systems to help them stay in compliance with drinking water regulations, improve water quality and manage their infrastructure. The branch also provides guidance for improving their water system, assistance with funding for upgrades and training for operators. Do you need some business guidance or technical assistance? Wastewater/ Stormwater

The department's Water Pollution Control Branch is responsible for regulating pollutants entering the state’s water. To do this, the branch issues permits for constructing and operating wastewater treatment facilities and stormwater discharges. Permits set wastewater treatment levels necessary to protect water quality. The program evaluates discharge monitoring and other data to determine whether facilities comply with all applicable provisions of federal and state environmental laws and regulations.

With assistance from the department's regional offices, the branch is also responsible for inspecting and monitoring water contaminant sources and investigates complaints from the public. The branch provides guidance and technical assistance to treatment systems to help them stay in compliance with clean water regulations, improve water quality and manage their infrastructure.
