Responsibilities

The Missouri Advisory Council on Historic Preservation plays a key role in preserving Missouri's cultural heritage. Both the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended and the Missouri Revised Statutes Chapter 253, RSMo require that nominations to the National Register of Historic Places be reviewed by a board consisting of 9 citizens, appointed by the Governor. This council reviews all Missouri nominations to the National Register of Historic Places and advises the state’s historic preservation officer. The council also provides advice, guidance and professional recommendations to the state historic preservation officer in carrying out the responsibilities of the National Historic Preservation Act and other duties, including administering Missouri’s Unmarked Human Burial Sites Act, as described under sections 194.400 to 194.410, RSMo.
