Abundant water is one of Missouri's most valuable economic, environmental and recreational resources. It is key to attracting industry and investment and creating jobs. Safe drinking water keeps our citizens healthy and communities strong. Proper transport and treatment of wastewater contribute to healthy communities and improved water quality for streams, rivers and lakes.

Water and Wastewater Professionals Week gives us a chance to recognize the people who make all of this possible. Water professionals include certified operators, collection crews, engineers, regulators, administrative support and other professionals in the water industry. These professionals carry out the daily operational activities at drinking water and wastewater treatment systems. They operate and maintain the infrastructure, facilities and services our communities depend on every day. Our communities rely on water and wastewater professionals to maintain services around the clock — through times of drought, flooding, ice storms and other challenging conditions. Whether ensuring there is an adequate supply of drinking water for their customers or that wastewater treatment facilities are discharging water in an environmental safe manner, these professionals contribute to the well-being of everyone in Missouri.

Because water infrastructure is so critical to everyday life, it has become the target of those seeking to harm our citizens. Water and wastewater professionals play a critical role in reducing vulnerabilities and protecting utilities from cyberattacks.

Water and Wastewater Professionals Week is a unique opportunity to recognize the vital role these individuals play in our daily lives. We invite you to join us in thanking the dedicated professionals who provide essential water and wastewater services in our communities. Communities are encouraged to celebrate their teams not only during this special week, but throughout the year. Recognition can be as simple as sharing photos and messages on social media, highlighting staff in your local newspaper or simply recognition of their contributions during public meetings.
