What is an energy landscape? An energy landscape refers to how energy systems within a specific area interact and evolve in response to social, political and economic trends, as well as the availability of resources. These landscapes are constantly adapting to meet changing needs and circumstances.

Missouri’s energy landscape today is not what it was a century – or even a decade – ago. Missouri’s energy landscape is evolving rapidly as leaders and utilities respond to changing demand and emerging technologies. Historically, coal has been Missouri’s primary electricity source produced in the state. While that is still true, the use of nuclear and wind energy now make up a growing share of Missouri’s energy landscape.

Today, innovations are enabling more efficient, affordable and sustainable energy production than ever before. For more information about Missouri’s energy landscape, explore the U.S. Energy Information Administration's Missouri State Profile and Energy Estimates webpage.
