Owned by utility company Evergy, the Montrose Generating Station Utility Waste Landfill is a coal combustion residuals landfill in Henry County. The Missouri Department of Natural Resource permits and regulates this site through multiple state and federal environmental regulations. The power plant has been decommissioned, but the landfill is still in operation. It receives ash from other Evergy facilities, mainly from their Hawthorn Power Plant.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) is aware of community concerns regarding the Montrose Generating Station Utility Waste Landfill. We are working with local and state partners to address community concerns regarding reports of dust blowing offsite from the landfill. We are actively conducting investigations to ensure the facility meets all environmental standards. The department created this web page to help make accessible the most current information about department activities related to the site. The department will add environmental sampling results and other information to the website as they become available.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (MDHSS) reviewed the recent MoDNR sampling results collected in Henry County, Missouri. The results were for one water sample collected under the bridge at Deepwater Creek and three soil samples collected in the area, two of which were collected at the Davis R-7 School. MDHSS found these results to be below levels of health concern. For the water sample, MDHSS used health-based comparison values protective for residential use of tap water. This is a conservative comparison since the primary use of Deepwater Creek is likely recreational, where incidental ingestion of and dermal contact with water would be much less than those assumed for use of tap water. For the soil samples, MDHSS used health-based comparison values protective for residential soil exposure, which account for potential exposure from the school or home.
