City will evaluate wastewater, stormwater and drinking water system improvements
JEFFERSON CITY, MO, APRIL 16, 2025 – The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded an $80,000 Clean Water Integrated Management Plan Grant to the city of Kearney to evaluate its wastewater, stormwater and drinking water systems.
The department’s Clean Water Integrated Management Plan Grant program offers funding to qualified communities to assist with preparing an integrated water management plan. Kearney will use the grant to prioritize wastewater, stormwater and drinking water system improvements needed to continue reliable service to the area and meet permit requirements. The city will also look at ways to reduce stormwater infiltration into sewer collection pipes and better manage stormwater as a resource. The plan should be complete in April 2027.
“Reliable water and wastewater infrastructure is essential for the sustainability of communities and industries, as well as the quality of life for all Missourians,” said Kurt Schaefer, director of the Department of Natural Resources.
Wastewater, drinking water and stormwater management systems are all essential infrastructure that support the health and economic vitality of a community. Through this grant, Kearney can assess its water collection and treatment infrastructure to identify more efficient ways to meet environmental requirements, as well as determine how best to prioritize capital investments.
The department is committed to assisting Missouri communities with wastewater, stormwater, and drinking water infrastructure improvement projects. Through its Financial Assistance Center, the department provides funding opportunities for qualified communities with water quality, wastewater and drinking water infrastructure needs. This project will be funded wholly or in part with monies received from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
