JEFFERSON CITY, MO, FEB. 3, 2025 – The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is working with local and state partners to address community concerns regarding reports of dust blowing offsite from the Montrose Generating Station Utility Waste Landfill.

The Department of Natural Resources has determined there are no identifiable issues for lead, selenium or arsenic from public water systems near the landfill, all of which use water that originates from Harry S Truman Public Water Supply District #2. Samples collected from Henry County public water systems near the landfill show levels for metals are in compliance with regulatory standards.

On Jan. 25, the department collected soil samples from the Davis R-XII school campus. The department has reviewed all sampling results and compared them to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Regional Screening Levels. Screening levels are risk-based action levels that, if exceeded, indicate the presence of contaminants at concentrations that require additional investigation and possibly cleanup.

Analysis by the Department of Natural Resources showed the soil sampled was below the regional screening levels for all contaminants except for arsenic, which was detected above the regional screening level in all of the department’s soil samples. The department is working with the Department of Health and Senior Services on public guidance in regard to handling soil that contains elevated levels of arsenic. However, the Department of Health and Senior Services notes that this heavy metal does occur naturally in background levels in Missouri.

Preliminary soil sample results show no detection of hexavalent chromium.

The department has developed a fact sheet and dedicated webpage to provide the most current information about department activities related to the site. The fact sheet is available at dnr.mo.gov/waste-recycling/sites-regulated-facilities/interest/montrose-generating-station-utility-landfill. The department will add environmental sampling results and other information to the website as they become available.

The department will continue to investigate and work with concerned parties and stakeholders.
