Knowing and measuring the quality of water can be challenging and involves three key components: developing water quality standards, identification of water bodies that are meeting and not meeting those standards (impaired waters), and developing a plan for how to return the impaired water bodies to compliance with water quality standards.
Water Quality Standards
Regulations describe how water bodies' desired conditions will be protected or achieved
