Overview

Background/ History

The McKesson Chemical Co. site is located at 505 E. Trafficway in Springfield. This facility was leased by McKesson and used as a drum storage facility for various chemical solvents destined for recycling. The facility functioned strictly as a temporary storage facility, allowing McKesson to receive less than a full truckload of spent materials, accumulate the spent materials until they had a full truckload and then ship the truckload to their recycling plant. In November 1982, McKesson stopped operating at the Trafficway facility and moved the operations to their 220 S. Barnes Ave. facility in Springfield.

The Trafficway site is currently owned by SPDF Tool & Die Co. and houses the S.T.D. Central Flea Market.

Cleanup Summary

In December 1982, McKesson notified the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that the Trafficway facility had stopped operating and all materials had been removed from the location and either shipped to another appropriately registered McKesson facility or directly to McKesson’s recycling division, McKesson Envirosystems, in New Castle, Kentucky. Included with the letter was a copy of the undated Closure Plan for the Trafficway facility and a closure certification. EPA is currently working with McKesson to close the site. McKesson is also subject to corrective action because they will have completed closure of the hazardous waste areas after the effective date of the federal Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments.
