The Doe Run. Co. operates two air monitoring stations in Buick. The South #1 monitor lies on company property south of the recycling facility. The North #5 monitor lies on Doe Run property north of the Buick Resource Recycling Facility, a secondary lead smelter that recaptures lead from lead-acid batteries. These two monitors produce data regarding airborne lead concentrations near the lead recycling plant; however, since the monitors do not stand on public property, EPA does not consider data from them when determining if the area is in compliance with the lead standard. Thus, EPA and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources classify these monitors as non-ambient air monitors.

Pollutants

Lead

The primary and secondary ambient air standards for lead have remained at 0.15 micrograms per cubic meter since 2008. The primary standard reflects EPA's concern for public health while the second standard demonstrates concern for public welfare. EPA bases the standard on the highest rolling three-month average over a period of three years and two months. A monitoring site meets the standard when this rolling three-month average is less than or equal to 0.15 μg/m3.
