This permit authorizes the discharge of process water from filter backwash and pool drainage from swimming pools and water features that use chlorine or bromine as a sanitizer through chemical addition or generation to waters of the state of Missouri. Definition of pools or water feature includes swimming pools, hot tubs, wading pools, splash pads, manmade fountains, pools, ponds, cascades, waterfalls and decorative streams. Facilities that may require this permit include: Miscellaneous Retail; Hotels and Other Lodging Places; Hotels, Motels and Tourist Courts; Camps and Trailering Parks; Sporting and Recreational Camps; Amusement Parks; Membership Sports and Recreation Clubs; Amusement and Recreation Services.
Discharges from “saltwater” pools, which produce chlorine through generation, are authorized by this permit. Discharges from pools or water features at single-family residences are exempted from permit requirements. Facilities discharging directly to a combined sewer system that is designed to collect stormwater, domestic sewage and industrial wastewater and sent to a sweater treatment plant are exempt from this permit. Length of Permit
The department issues this general permit for a five-year period. The effective date is Sept. 1, 2024 and expires Aug. 31, 2029. If a facility applies for and receives this permit on June 1, 2026, their permit will expire Aug. 31, 2029.
