The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) provides data on total annual energy production by state in British thermal units (Btu), as well as information on fuel ethanol production (including denaturant, in thousand barrels), biodiesel production (in thousand barrels), electricity generation (in thousand megawatt-hours, or million kilowatt-hours) and coal mine production in short tons. Several of these data sets are provided below. Caution should be exercised when comparing electricity generation data from different years because of methodology changes. Review Electric Power Monthly Technical Notes PFM Update Appendix C and Electric Power Annual Technical Notes Appendix.
For more information, please visit EIA’s State Energy Data System, Electricity and Coal pages. The American Clean Power Association also provides data on wind, solar and energy storage by state, and the Solar Energy Industries Association provides state-level data on solar capacity installations. Visit the department’s Oil and Gas Resources page for information on in-state production of oil and gas.
