Affordable way to learn new skills at the Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, SEPT. 25, 2023 – Are you looking for a safe, easy way for you and your family to discover outdoor adventures? Then the WOW Kansas City Outdoor Skills Day may be the perfect solution. Missouri State Parks and the Missouri Department of Conservation are joining to bring the WOW school back for 2023. WOW, which stands for Wonders of Wildlife, is a full-day program designed to give first-time and novice campers a chance to explore camping, outdoor cooking, archery and more.

WOW is happening Saturday, Oct. 14, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center, located at 4750 Troost Ave. in Kansas City. This comprehensive educational program allows participants to select from a variety of courses and workshops. The cost to attend WOW is $10 per person, making it an affordable day of family fun. The registration fee includes equipment for all activities, a t-shirt and lunch.

The goal of WOW classes is to teach participants how to enjoy a wide range of outdoor recreational activities, while practicing personal safety and outdoor responsibility. Classes are open to anyone age 10 and older. Littles WOW Day Camp is available at the same time and location for participants age 5 through 9.

WOW 2023 classes include:

  1. Intro to Camping & Fire Starting.
  2. Outdoor Cooking.
  3. Archery.
  4. Annular Eclipse programming and viewing.
  5. Birding.

The purpose of WOW Kansas City is to empower anyone who is new to camping and outdoor recreation with the skills, comfort and confidence they need to take the next steps on their own. The emphasis is on family participation; however, individuals are welcome. The program is part of the WOW National Outdoor Recreation and Conservation School. It’s packed with opportunities to learn skills that will enhance your outdoor experience.

Check-in is from 8 to 8:45 a.m. outside of the front entrance to the Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center. Parking is available in the parking lot on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must check in before attending classes. Preregistration is required and no same-day registrations will be accepted.
