JEFFERSON CITY, MO, AUG. 26, 2021 – Staff members at Sam A. Baker State Park invite the public to explore the past 200 years of what is now Sam A. Baker State Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 11. Registration for van tours will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Sam A. Baker State Park is a place of distinct natural history, beauty and value. Even before becoming a park, the area attracted people because of its grand peaks, clear streams and diverse forests.

Participants will start their adventure with a guided van ride to the Mudlick Mountain Fire Tower. From the tower, they have the choice of riding in the van on the return trip or continuing with a hike down Mudlick Mountain to discover the unique geology of the St. Francois Mountains. Participants will pass waterfalls and bluffs, and relax at a historic shelter built by the  Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) featuring a breathtaking overlook of Big Creek. Those who choose to hike should be prepared for rugged, steep terrain by wearing sturdy hiking shoes and bringing plenty of snacks and water.

Other activities for the day include a letterboxing challenge, old-time games, activities and more.

Participants can finish off the day by relaxing to great music, fun company and a little comedy from the Whitewater Bluegrass Band. This upbeat bluegrass band, in its 15th year as a group, plays traditional and new bluegrass music. Visitors are encouraged to practice social distancing by bringing chairs or blankets to sit on.

The public is strongly encouraged to follow social-distancing guidelines and be proactive in protecting themselves and others.
