JEFFERSON CITY, MO, APRIL 17, 2023 – The Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Missouri Geological Survey and Missouri Office of Geospatial Information will receive a Special Achievement in GIS Award at the 2023 Esri User Conference. Esri, a global leader in location intelligence, recognized the creation of the Missouri Geological Survey’s ArcGIS Hub. The website powers more than a dozen applications sharing essential geologic and hydrologic information through interactive maps at no additional cost to the public.
The Missouri Geological Survey and Missouri Office of Geospatial Information achieved the award through striving for excellence and finding creative solutions to care for Missouri’s natural resources while building relationships to pursue common goals. Their work improves the quality of life for Missourians by providing earth science information to benefit public health and safety.
The awarded project team members include Deputy Director Jerry Prewett and Geologic Mapping Unit Chief Vicki Voigt of the Missouri Geological Survey, as well as GIS Specialist Mustafa Rahim and GIS Manager Shawn Barbie of the Missouri Office of Geospatial Information.
“GIS is an important tool that allows our staff to innovate better ways of managing Missouri’s resources and create valuable new applications to aid the public’s understanding of our stewardship mission,” said State Geologist and Missouri Geological Survey Director Carey Bridges. “I am proud to know our team has received this honor for their mastery of GIS and continued commitment to excellence.”
In its announcement, Esri wrote that the award is given to user sites around the world to recognize outstanding work with GIS technology. The Missouri Geological Survey and Missouri Office of Geospatial Information were selected from among 100,000 other candidates. Esri will showcase the Missouri Geological Survey’s ArcGIS Hub the during the awards ceremony at its annual Esri User Conference, to be held July 10-14, 2023, in San Diego.
The Missouri Office of Geospatial Information previously received the SAG Award in 2020 in partnership with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Division of State Parks. That award recognized outstanding work including the creation of the Katy Trail Advisory Map and online inventory of historic buildings throughout Missouri’s state park system.
