JEFFERSON CITY, MO, OCT. 2, 2021 – Staff members at First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site invite the public to learn about raising the Missouri state insect, the honeybee, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13.
Participants will be joined by Three Rivers Beekeepers, a fast-growing beekeeping club located in St. Peters, Missouri. The program will cover why honeybees are such amazing pollinators, how the social structure of a honeybee hive works, current threats to the honeybee populations and what Missourians can do to help.
Three Rivers Beekeepers’ monthly club meetings cover a wide spectrum of timely beekeeping subjects. They also offer specialty workshops, such as Beginning Beekeeping, Intermediate/Advanced Beekeeping and Queen Rearing.
Three Rivers Beekeepers also has a small group of education outreach volunteers who visit schools, scouting groups, summer camps, garden clubs and community events to boost honeybee awareness and stewardship.
The public is strongly encouraged to follow social-distancing guidelines and be proactive in protecting themselves and others.
This program is part of the Heritage Lecture Series and one of many events Missouri State Parks is hosting to commemorate the state's bicentennial. To see a complete list of bicentennial-related events and learn more about the commemoration, visit mostateparks.com/bicentennial.
