JEFFERSON CITY, MO, AUG. 29, 2019 – Washington State Park invites the public to its annual Archaeology Day event 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the park’s shelter #1/CCC Ridge. This free event is held in collaboration with the Three Rivers Chapter of the Missouri Archaeological Society. This year, the World Bird Sanctuary will be featured guests.
The Archaeology Day event will feature activities for kids, including corn grinding and making petroglyph necklaces, along with other crafts and games. The Three Rivers Chapter of Missouri Archaeological Society will also have artifacts on display. Demonstrations throughout the day will include atlatl throwing and flint knapping. The Friends of Washington State Park will sell concessions at this event.
The World Bird Sanctuary will present a raptor basics program highlighting the importance of these incredible birds in our environment at 1 p.m. This program features birds of prey including falcons, hawks, owls, vultures and a bald eagle. Come out to learn why these birds are so special, what you can do to help ensure their survival and what role they play in our environment. Sit back and enjoy a close-up view as some birds soar right overhead! While Washington State Park is dog-friendly, no pets, including leashed dogs will not be allowed into this event.
A guided tour by Washington State Park interpretive staff will be held at the Petroglyph Site at 2 p.m.
