The 26th Annual War of 1812 in the West Symposium will be held at Arrow Rock State Historic Site in Arrow Rock. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks and the 1st U.S. Infantry historical organization, the event will begin at 9 a.m. on April 2-3 at the site's visitor center.
Presentations by noted historians will discuss the personalities, military and social conditions of the war and western territories of the period. During the War of 1812, the United States invaded Canada, British troops burned Washington D.C., and Francis Scott Key penned the national anthem. For many Native nations, the war was a last effort to retain their tribal lands. Missouri was the scene of some of the westernmost actions of what was then termed as "America’s Second War for Independence." The symposium is free and open to the public.
