JEFFERSON CITY, MO, APRIL 8, 2019 – The Missouri Folk Arts Program and Missouri State Museum will co-sponsor and host a live artist demonstration and display of Potawatomi beadwork applique from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 16. This drop-in educational program will be located in the Missouri State Museum’s History Hall. Visitors are invited to learn more about Potawatomi cultural and artistic expression, the apprenticeship program and programs of the Missouri State Museum.
The demonstration will be provided by textile artist Peggy Kinder, an accomplished master recognized by her tribe and beyond for her beadwork applique and handsewn ribbon work designs used to decorate Potawatomi traditional apparel and other items. She will be joined by her dedicated and talented apprentice Cindy Jarrar, who has been advancing her skills under Peggy’s tutelage.
In October, 2018 Peggy and Cindy were selected through a competitive process to participate in the Missouri Folk Arts Program’s statewide Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. This program pairs master folk artists with apprentices to pass traditions to the next generation. The program is made possible by funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Missouri Arts Council.
