JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JUNE 19, 2019 – Join researcher Lanny Chambers at Onondaga State Park as he captures, bands and studies ruby-throated hummingbirds during at a banding event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, July 6 at the park’s visitor center. Reservations are not required.
There is much that scientists still don’t know about hummingbirds. By carefully placing an identification band on a hummingbird’s tiny leg, researchers can study its movements, behavior, migration patterns and lifespan. Participants will get a close-up look at these tiny birds while they learn interesting facts about their natural history and how people can help protect them. Visitors are welcome to bring cameras but will be instructed to keep an adequate distance from the birds and researchers to ensure the birds’ safety.
Additional events will be held July 27 and Aug. 31.
