JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JULY 2, 2024 – Summer is here, and there’s a lot to do at Missouri’s state parks and historic sites in northeast Missouri.
- Friday, July 19 at 7 p.m.: Petroglyph Tour at Thousand Hills State Park
Thousand Hills State Park is home to a collection of rock carvings, or petroglyphs, made by ancestors of today’s American Indians. Explore the petroglyphs with the park team to learn more about this unique piece of Missouri history. Tours take place at the petroglyph shelter, located next to the beach. Tours are free and open to the public. Thousand Hills State Park is located at 20431 State Highway 157 in Kirksville.
- Thursday, July 25 at 6 p.m.: Volunteer Meeting at Cuivre River State Park
Cuivre River State Park will host a quarterly volunteer meeting at the visitor center beginning center at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 25. During the meeting, the park team will discuss various volunteer opportunities coming up in the next months, including, but not limited to, litter patrol, campground cleanup, campground hosting, invasive species management, graffiti removal, trail maintenance and assisting with programs and maintenance projects. The team will also discuss upcoming Volunteer Days, provide updates on park happenings and answer general questions. You do not have to be a registered volunteer to attend the meeting. Anyone who is interested in volunteering or who is a regular volunteer, is encouraged to stop by. You can register to become a volunteer at the event. Cuivre River State Park is located at 678 State Route 147 in Troy.
- Saturday, July 27, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.: Women in Nature at Mark Twain State Park
Hey ladies! Have you ever wanted to explore the great outdoors, but didn’t know where to begin? Join the team at Mark Twain State Park for Women in Nature’s full-day experience to learn some new skills, all taught by female instructors. This event is intended to be educational and relaxing. Whether you are new to the outdoors or consider yourself an expert, we will help you gain a few new skills and improve your techniques in a relaxed, fun and supportive atmosphere. Please wear clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for outdoor and water activities. It is recommended that participants bring sunglasses, a hat, a water bottle and sunscreen. Activities include archery and atlatl, Dutch oven cooking, fishing basics and kayaking. There is a $20 registration fee and a maximum of 40 participants.
