JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JAN. 23, 2019 – The Missouri State Museum will present the program "World War I Medicine" as part of its ongoing Museum After Hours series at 7 p.m., Feb. 6. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the program will move to the Jefferson Landing State Historic Site for 2019.
World War I pushed the boundaries of modern medicine. Doctors, nurses and others struggled to keep up with the devastating impact of this first truly modern war. There were more than 40 million casualties, both civilian and military, and 20 million deaths as a direct result of the war. The United States had more than 320,000 casualties, with more than 10,000 from Missouri. Disease, in particular the 1918 flu epidemic, caused more than a third of all deaths. This presentation will explore how medicine and medical practitioners responded to battlefield injuries and disease during the war.
The Missouri State Museum’s After Hours events are held the first Wednesday of each month. Doors to the Lohman Building will open at 6 p.m. with the program starting at 7 p.m. Come early to explore the historic site (enter through the track-side doors) before the program. The program will be held in the first floor classroom, easily accessed from the south entrance door. Convenient parking is available in the lot next to the Lohman Building.
