JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JUNE 7, 2019 – In the early 19th century nearly every home had its own garden. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m,. Saturday, June 15,  visitors can explore the rich history of gardening at the First Missouri State Capitol State Historic site. Although gardening today is often considered a hobby or pastime, for St. Charles’ early settlers growing a garden was a matter of survival. 

Come take a tour of Missouri’s historic first state capitol building and learn about the struggle for statehood and the Peck family who lived and worked beneath the feet of our first legislators. After your tour, you can stroll through the beautiful backyard located right on the Missouri River then visit the heritage garden where staff will explain various plants grown at the first Missouri State Capitol Historic site and their uses in the early 19th century.
