JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JULY 5, 2019 – The public is invited to participate in a Naturalist in the Making Hike from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, at Graham Cave State Park.
What do naturalists do when they are out in the field? What do they look for, what do they see? This hike, guided by Park Naturalist Lorie Volenberg, will help answer those questions.Two Discovery Backpacks filled with identification tools for wildflowers, ferns, trees, birds and more will be used on the hike. Each backpack has a pair of binoculars to see things far away and a hand lens to explore tiny things up close. Kids will be given their own Discovery Book to complete along the way. When completed, they may bring it into the visitor’s center to get stamped!
This 2-mile hike on the Loutre River Trail will yield the opportunity to explore different habitats such as bottomland forests, oak and hickory upland forests, and limestone glades. Some sections of trails are rocky and good hiking shoes are recommended. It is recommended to bring a bottle of water and to use insect repellent.
