First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site offers stool caning class Nov. 9
JEFFERSON CITY, MO, OCT 23, 2019 – The First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site will offer a stool caning class from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sat., Nov. 9, at the historic site.
Cane work is a form of basketry that has been used in furniture for thousands of years. It dates back to Ancient China and archaeologists have discovered caned chairs in Egyptian tombs dating to 1300 B.C. Caned bottom chairs were popular in Europe during the 17th and early 18th centuries. In America, many people would make their own chairs with solid wood seats or seats made from rush or cattails.
In this class participants will learn history behind the art of caning and the techniques needed to create a stool of their own to take home. The class is $70 and includes lunch and all materials. Bring a drink and snacks if you wish. Class size is limited, so registration is required.
