The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded a $52 million low-interest loan to the St. Louis Metropolitan Sewer District to rehabilitate and upgrade the Missouri River Wastewater Treatment Plant and collection systems throughout the district.
The funding will support two separate sewer projects, which are designed to rehabilitate and upgrade the Missouri River Wastewater Treatment Plant and its collection system. The Missouri River Wastewater Treatment Plant project is in its final phase, which consists of an activated sludge treatment facility and six final clarifiers, is estimated to cost $17 million and is expected to be complete in 2014. The second project focuses on public inflow and infiltration reduction, and is aimed at reducing sanitary sewer overflow occurrences. The first phase of this project is estimated to cost $35 million and expected to be complete in 2016.
Funding for the loan comes from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund. The department’s Water Protection Program will administer the loan and is committed to assisting with funding efforts that support clean water infrastructure improvement projects and provide a financial savings.
