The story of the Trail of Tears through Missouri will be the focus of the "Museum after Hours" program Sept. 7 at the Missouri State Museum in Jefferson City. The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the History Hall of the east wing of the Missouri State Capitol.
Between1837 and 1839, 13 detachments of Cherokee traveled overland through Missouri after being forced from their homelands in the southeastern states. These groups took three routes through Missouri, giving the state more miles of the Cherokee Trail of Tears than any other state. The program will feature a virtual trip along the Trail of Tears and look at the places and conditions along the state’s routes.
The program continues the museum’s ongoing "Museum after Hours" series, held the first Wednesday of each month. In addition to the program, the museum’s galleries will be open until 9 p.m.
