JEFFERSON CITY, MO, APRIL 26, 2018 – Join researcher Lanny Chambers at Onondaga State Park as he captures and bands ruby-throated hummingbirds during a series of banding events offered at the park. The first event is set for May 5, with all of the events beginning at 10 a.m. in the park’s visitor center. Reservations are not required.

There is much that scientists still don’t know about hummingbirds. By carefully placing an identification band on a hummingbird’s tiny leg, researchers can study its movements, behavior, migration patterns and lifespan. Participants will get a close-up look at these tiny birds while they learn interesting facts about their natural history and how people can help protect them. Visitors are welcome to bring cameras but will be instructed to keep an adequate distance from the birds and researchers to ensure the birds’ safety.

Onondaga Cave State Park is located seven miles southeast of the Leasburg exit off of Interstate 44 on Highway H. For more information about this and other events, contact the park at 573-245-6576.
