JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JUNE 27, 2018 – Master fiddler Howard Marshall will be the featured speaker and performer during the First Saturday Lecture 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, at Arrow Rock State Historic Site’s visitor center. The title of Marshall’s presentation is "Fiddler’s Dream: Missouri’s Continuing Heritage of Traditional Fiddle and Dance Music." He will perform some classic traditional fiddle tunes as part of the lecture. The program is free and open to the public.
For more than four decades, Marshall has been devoted to conserving, studying and carrying on traditional fiddle music. A member of a pioneer Randolph County family and a retired University of Missouri professor of art history, Marshall has played fiddle since the late 1960s. He notes that there has been a fiddler in every generation of his family since 1830. Marshall’s performances focus on music he inherited from master old-time fiddlers.
Marshall also writes about the history of fiddling, produces CDs by Missouri fiddlers and recently reissued a book and double CD called "Now That’s a Good Tune: Masters of Traditional Missouri Fiddling."
