A folk festival featuring a variety of historic crafters will be held Sept. 5 at Boone’s Lick State Historic Site near Boonsboro. The free event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Boone’s Lick was the site of an early 19th century salt manufacturing industry. The event will feature tours around the salt springs explaining the importance of salt mining in the early economy. Historic crafters will give 19th century demonstrations to educate the public on the life and times of settlers in the Boonslick area. Musicians will entertain the audience with music of the period.
Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone, sons of famed frontiersman Daniel Boone, began manufacturing salt at the location in 1805. In pioneer times, salt was indispensable for preserving meat and tanning animal hides.
