Gov. Mike Parson signed a proclamation declaring Oct. 10-16 as Earth Science Week in Missouri. The governor’s proclamation recognizes the importance of water in our lives and encourages everyone to participate in the conservation and protection of water, while engaging in earth science

Events scheduled nationwide for Oct.10-16 will celebrate the theme “Water Today and for the Future.” This year's event will focus on the importance of learning how to understand, conserve and protect water, perhaps Earth's most vital resource. Individuals of all backgrounds, ages and abilities are encouraged to engage with the geosciences, whether as a geoscience professional, a hobbyist or through civic engagement. Earth science is all around us.

Focus days include:

  • Oct. 10 – International Earthcache Day
  • Oct. 11 – Minerals Day
  • Oct. 12 – Earth Observation Day and No Child Left Inside Day
  • Oct. 13 – National Fossil Day
  • Oct. 14 – Geoscience for Everyone Day
  • Oct. 15 – Geologic Map Day
  • Oct. 16 – International Archaeology Day

Earth Science Week contests are underway. Categories include photography, video, visual arts and essay.

Enjoy a self-guided tour of our Ed Clark Museum of Missouri Geology, in Rolla. The museum illustrates the geologic history of Missouri through an ongoing collection of rock, mineral and fossil displays.

The Missouri State Museum, located in the Capitol in Jefferson City, is where you will find fossils embedded in the limestone walls, floors and stairs of the building, along with numerous exhibits about Missouri.
