JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded $1.86 million in financial assistance to the city of Lathrop to install approximately 3.5 miles of 6-inch water line and 1 mile of 8-inch water lines and all the necessary appurtenances for a fully functional water distribution system. The funding will also pay for repainting the existing 300,000 gallon elevated storage tank, adding a flap valve on the overflow and installing a mixing system to the tank. The project is estimated to cost $1.86 million and is expected to be completed by November 2017.
"This funding provides Lathrop the opportunity to update their water distribution system while potentially saving the community nearly $1.2 million over the life of the loan," said Harry Bozoian, director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. "These updates will ensure that the facility can safely meet the community’s water needs well into the future."
The distribution system improvements will provide looping to eliminate dead-end water mains, address system failures, such as water main breaks, and provide the expected capacity due to the forecasted growth of the system. Repainting the tank will prevent corrosion and possible water contamination. Installing the mixing system will prevent stagnation and minimize water quality problems.
The funding for the project consists of a $930,710 grant and a $931,000 low-interest loan from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund, which provides financial assistance to communities with infrastructure needs for water quality, wastewater and drinking water.
The $1.86 million funding package is estimated to save the district’s ratepayers $930,710 in principal and approximately $250,000 in interest costs over the 20-year term of the loan.
The department’s Water Protection Program will administer the funds and is committed to working closely with public entities to assist with funding efforts that support water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects, as well as provide a financial savings. This project will be funded wholly or in part with monies received from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency.
