JEFFERSON CITY, MO, MARCH 1, 2018 - The Department of Natural Resources’ Southeast Regional Office continues to offer assistance to the city of Malden following the aftermath of an EF- 2 Tornado that hit the community on the evening of Feb. 24. The tornado destroyed homes, local businesses, brought down trees and knocked out power to a portion of the community and caused minor injuries to several local residents.
The department, in coordination with the State Emergency Management Agency, will be available at the Multi-Agency Resource Center (MARC) from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 2, at the Malden Community Center, 607 N. Douglass Street, Malden to provide additional information and assistance to those affected by the disaster.
The department's Southeast Regional Office and city officials determined the drinking water and sewer services were operational following the tornado. However, due to the large volume of downed trees and other vegetative wastes, the department determined there was an immediate need for a burn permit to help mitigate the waste. Regional office staff expedited the permit and worked with the city to establish a debris collection location.
City officials were very pleased and expressed their appreciation for the department’s quick response efforts. Staff from the Southeast Regional Office continue to monitor cleanup efforts at the City of Malden and stand ready to assist city leaders and the community in their recovery efforts.
