JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JUNE 14, 2018 – Battle of Lexington State Historic site invites the public to gather in downtown Lexington to watch a re-enactment of the attempted capture and killing of infamous Missouri guerilla and outlaw Archie Clements. The live-action performance will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 23.
The action starts at 1015 Franklin Avenue and ends at the Lafayette County Courthouse. The event is sponsored by the Lexington Tourism Commission, Elliot Scouts, Big Muddy Ice Cream Company and Missouri State Parks.
On Dec. 13, 1866, Archibald "Archie" Clements was ambushed by state militia at a hotel in Lexington. The battle moved into the streets as Clements attempted to escape. Known as "Scalping Archie," Clements suffered 34 bullet wounds during the desperate fight. He died trying to fire his last bullets. His last words are quoted as, "I’ve done what I’ve always said I would do…die before I surrender."
