Biofuels are alternative liquid fuels used primarily in the transportation sector and the data below reflects Missouri’s current production capacities. Environmental permits are required for biofuel production facilities.

Ethanol

Missouri ranks fifteenth in the U.S. based on ethanol plant nameplate capacity. As of June 2012, Missouri has the nameplate capacity to produce 271 million gallons of ethanol annually, which is roughly 1.8 percent of the nation's capacity of 14.8 billion gallons.

Biodiesel

As of June 2012, Missouri has ten commercial biodiesel production facilities which utilize both soybean oil and animal fats as feedstock. The total nameplate capacity in the state is around 243 million gallons, which roughly accounts for 8 percent of the nation’s capacity of nearly 3 billion gallons.
