Dams in Missouri can generally be described in three different categories based on the height of dam. 

  • Dams less than 25 feet are generally not accounted for and detailed information is not available. These dams are unregulated in the state of Missouri.
  • Dams greater than 25 feet but less than 35 feet are accounted for and information such as dam height is collected for the National Inventory of Dams. These dams are unregulated in the state of Missouri.
  • Dams 35 feet or more in height are regulated in the state of Missouri and require a permit for construction and operation.
