Water Quality Standards Workgroup
PurposeThis workgroup will provide input and assistance to the department in developing and refining appropriate water quality standards for the protection of Missouri’s streams, lakes, and wetlands. Water quality standards are provisions in Missouri’s state regulations that describe the desired condition of a water body and the means by which that condition will be protected or achieved. The three core components of water quality standards are the designated uses of a water body, the criteria to protect those uses, and antidegradation requirements to protect existing uses.
The department is continually working to improve Missouri’s water quality standards to best reflect the most recent science and regulatory obligations extended to Missouri’s waters. Because the process for developing new or revised water quality standards can be extensive, the Water Quality Standards Unit of the Water Protection Program will be releasing an annual inventory of projects and priorities.
Inventory of Water Quality Standards Projects coming soon
Section 303(c)(1) of the Clean Water Act and the EPA’s implementing regulations at 40 CFR 131.20 require that states, from time to time, but at least once every three years, hold public hearings to review applicable water quality standards and, as appropriate, modify and adopt water quality standards. On January 2, 2019, the Department made available for public comment the Intent to Initiate Triennial Review of Missouri Water Quality Standards. The public notice period ran through March 2, 2019. Visit the Water Protection Program Rule Development page for up-to-date information on the status of the 10 CSR 20-7.031 – Water Quality Standards rule.
