The department assesses and investigates abandoned or uncontrolled hazardous waste disposal sites where a release or potential release of a hazardous substance poses a risk to human health or the environment. The department and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determine the appropriate cleanup actions and oversee work performed at the highest priority sites on the National Priorities List, in addition to other Superfund sites that range from small waste drum cleanups to landfills that need monitoring for many years. Some of Missouri's lead sites encompass almost a whole county and are very complex.
