Funds for Home Energy Efficiency

Energize Missouri Homes Homeowner Upgrades and Geothermal Program

Home energy upgrades are investments that save homeowners money year-after-year.

For example - Missouri homeowners who improve their home’s energy efficiency by 15 percent will save on average of 5,000 kWh per year which is the annual savings equivalent to removing a car off the road for 1 year.  Achieving a 25 percent increase in home energy efficiency will save more than $800 in utility bills annually.

Achieving similar savings is made easier with Energize Missouri Homeowner Upgrade and Geothermal Program (HUG).

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is distributing more than $7 million in energy efficiency rebates through this program.

The Department has partnered with six organizations across the state to provide owner-occupants of single family homes in Missouri funding ranging from $2,000 -$17,000 for energy audits and energy efficiency upgrades such as weather stripping, insulation, efficient heating and cooling systems and installing geothermal systems.

The first step in the program is to schedule a home energy audit with an Energize Missouri Homes qualified auditor. The auditor will assess your home’s energy use and give you a report with recommended energy efficiency upgrades.  If some of the suggested energy efficiency upgrades are implemented and achieve at least a 15 percent energy savings over you audited baseline, you are eligible to receive a rebate of up to $500 for the audit and additional funds for eligible upgrades.

Utility and Cooperative Rebate ProgramsMissouri Tax Deduction for Home Energy Efficiency Improvements - Missouri legislation allows homeowners to deduct the cost of home energy audits and energy efficiency improvements from their income taxes. The deduction has a $1,000 limit per individual or joint taxpayer return and a $2,000 cumulative limit per individual or taxpayer. Audits must be performed by a home energy auditor certified by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Federal Personal Tax Credit for energy-efficient home Improvements – applies to energy efficiency improvements for the purchase of high-efficiency heating, cooling and water-heating equipment. Efficiency improvements or equipment must be installed and used by the taxpayer as a primary residence.
