Missouri's Certified Local Districts
In addition to districts and individual properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Missouri is rich in locally designated historic districts. Some of the historic districts in Kansas City and St. Louis have been certified by the U.S. Department of the Interior as substantially meeting National Register criteria.
Although these "Certified Local Districts" are not listed on the National Register of Historic Places, buildings that are determined to contribute to these districts are "certified historic structures" and thus eligible for historic rehab tax credits. For your convenience, maps of the districts will be posted to this page as they become available.
Some of these maps do not indicate whether or not particular buildings were determined to contribute to the district when the district was certified. The maps that do provide this indication do so based on the material provided to the SHPO and the National Park Service for certification during the 1970s–'80s and therefore indicate the status of each building as determined when the map was drawn. A particular building which may have been determined to be a contributing element in the district when it was certified by the Department of the Interior may have been so altered since that point that it is no longer a certified historic structure for the purposes of historic rehab tax credits — this determination is made based on photographic evidence provided with the Part 1 (federal) or Part 1a (state) form submitted at the beginning of any historic rehab tax credit project.
