JEFFERSON CITY, MO, SEPT. 19, 2008 -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is developing rules to implement both the departmental and the revised tanks Risk-Based Corrective Action processes. To explain the content and structure of the proposed rules and the revisions to the tanks guidance, the department will hold a Missouri Risk-Based Corrective Action rules workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 9.

The department will hold the workshop in the Roaring River Conference Room, Department of Natural Resources' Elm Street Conference Center, 1730 E. Elm St., Jefferson City.

The departmental and tanks Risk-Based Corrective Action processes determine if, and to what extent, cleanup and long-term stewardship are needed at a polluted site. Both risk-base processes link the need for cleanup to the risk pollution poses to human health and the environment. The future use of a site is a major factor when assessing risk and the level of cleanup; a school playground might require more cleanup than a future parking lot. Similarly, remaining contamination and future site use are factors to consider in long-term stewardship decisions.

The workshop will serve as an opportunity for the department to share with stakeholders the status of the rulemaking process and details of the proposed rules. This workshop is not to be confused with the official public comment periods that are upcoming for both rulemaking efforts.

Besides sharing the schedule, structure and contents of the draft Risk-Based Corrective Action rules, department staff will go through the Tanks Risk-Based Corrective Action revised guidance document and explain the reasoning behind major changes to the guidance.

The workshop is open to all interested parties. Registration is not required; however, those wishing to attend, or people interested in using a call-in number for the workshop, are asked to contact Mark Conner at 800-361-4827 or 573-526-3708. Hearing impaired individuals may contact the program through Relay Missouri at 800-735-2966.

Questions regarding the Risk-Based Corrective Action proposed rules and guidance documents should be directed to Tim Chibnall with the department's Hazardous Waste Program at
800-361-4827 or 573-522-1833.
