JEFFERSON CITY, MO, NOV. 18, 2004 -- Step back in time and enjoy the sights, sounds and flavors of Christmas' past this holiday season in Missouri state historic sites. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, these events range from candlelight tours to open houses serving Christmas treats with a foreign flavor.
- Nov. 27 -- Hanging of the Greens, Arrow Rock State Historic Site, Arrow Rock 660-837-3330. Join the Christmas caroling at 1 p.m. as the evergreen boughs are hung along the boardwalk, followed by a visit from Santa Claus.
- Nov. 27 -- Dec. 31 -- Yesteryear Christmas Exhibit, Arrow Rock State Historic Site, Arrow Rock 660-837-3330. Christmas decorations of the past, made from natural materials with ribbon, paper, thread and fabric, will be on exhibit from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the site's visitor center.
- Dec. 4 - 5 -- Christmas Open House and Weihnachtsfest, Deutschheim State Historic Site, Hermann 573-486-2200. View seven different styles of 19th century Christmas trees decorated in traditional German fashion. There will be live period music and craft demonstrations. German cookie samples and other baked items will be available at this free event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
- Dec. 4 -- Christmas on the Farm, Watkins Woolen Mill State Park and State Historic Site, Lawson 816-580-3387. The historic site will host an 1870s Christmas celebration from noon until 8 p.m. at the traditionally decorated Watkins home. Activities of the day include parlor games, caroling, period refreshments and other entertainment into the evening hours.
- Dec. 10 - 11 -- Christmas Candlelight Tours, Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site, New Madrid 573-748-5340. Enjoy the feel of a 19th century Victorian-style Christmas. The house will be decorated in Victorian fashion and illuminated by oil lamps and candles. Tours will be given from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
- Dec. 11 - 12 -- Christmas Open House and Weihnachtsfest, Deutschheim State Historic Site, Hermann 573-486-2200. - Dec. 11 -- Immigrant Christmas, Battle of Lexington State Historic Site, Lexington 660-259-4654. The Friends of the Anderson House will portray several immigrant groups that came to Lexington. Each room of the Anderson House will reflect the Christmas traditions, décor, food and customs of these groups. There is a fee and reservations are recommended for this event, which will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- Dec. 11 -- Christmas Open House, Battle of Athens State Historic Site, Athens 660-877-3871. Period re-enactors will greet visitors at the seasonally decorated Thome-Benning (Cannonball) House from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours, Christmas exhibits, musical entertainment and refreshments will be provided.
- Dec. 11 -- Annual Ragtime Christmas Party and Open House, Scott Joplin House State Historic Site, St. Louis 314-340-5790. Staff in period costume will greet visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and give tours of Scott Joplin's turn-of-the-century home, which will be decorated with traditional decorations. Admission is free.
- Dec. 12 -- French Christmas Open House, Felix Vallé House State Historic Site, Ste. Genevieve 573-883-7102. This annual celebration highlights the music, food, customs and decorations of an early French Christmas celebration known as Le Revellion. Costumed guides will explain the early 1800s customs and the dining room will be filled with traditional foods of the period, including the buche de Noel (Yule log cake). Admission is free to this event, which takes place from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Dec. 12 -- Christmas Open House, Gen. John J. Pershing Boyhood Home State Historic Site, Laclede (663) 963-2525. Gen. Pershing's boyhood home will be decorated in Victorian fashion. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., there will be music and refreshments for all to enjoy.
