Volume 41-207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Oct. 25, 2013
Jefferson City, Mo. - The Missouri State Museum will present the program, “World War I County Service Banners,” as part of its ongoing “Museum after Hours” series on Wednesday, Nov. 6. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the program will begin at 7 p.m. in the museum classroom, located in the History Hall in the east wing of the State Capitol.
After World War I, Missouri counties honored servicemen and women through this joint project between the state and its counties. Visitors will learn how plans for the commemorative banners originated, the information they provide for today’s historians and details of the ongoing efforts to preserve these important pieces of history. The museum currently has 100 in its collection.
The Missouri State Museum’s “Museum after Hours” events are held the first Wednesday of each month when the museum galleries remain open from 5-9 p.m. “Museum after Hours” is for those who have wondered what it would be like to visit the museum at night or whose schedule doesn’t allow daytime outings. In addition to the special programs, the event allows a more relaxed time to view all the museum exhibits. These exhibits include both old favorites and new offerings, including “Civil War Missouri: A House Dividing,” which commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and includes a rotating artifact collection that changes every 6 months. Evening entry to the museum will be through the carriage entrance on the south side of the building underneath the grand staircase.
The Missouri State Museum, which is part of the Missouri state park system, is located on the first floor of the Missouri State Capitol. For more information, contact the museum at 573-751-2854.
