The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will hold a public awareness session Jan. 8 in St. Joseph on the permitting process that will be used for a proposed expansion of the St. Joseph Sanitary Landfill.
The department has granted the city of St. Joseph approval to begin an investigation to determine if the geology of the area is suitable for an expansion of the landfill, which is located at 9431 50th Road S.E., approximately 3.5 miles south of the St. Joseph city limits. A detailed site investigation work plan is being prepared.
The session will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chambers, Room 301, 1100 Frederick Ave. in St. Joseph. Representatives of the department’s Division of Geology and Land Survey, Solid Waste Management Program and Kansas City Regional Office will be present along with representatives from St. Joseph Sanitary Landfill to answer questions during the informal discussion period.
The department reviews all applications submitted by cities, counties and private owners to ensure that sanitary landfills are properly designed and constructed. Technical factors that protect Missouri’s environment are also examined. This public session will explain the application review process and the approximate time-line for ruling on the permit application.
