JEFFERSON CITY, MO, MAY 4, 2011—The Missouri Department of Natural Resources announced today that 16 community water systems will receive a total of $166,556 for projects to protect drinking water sources.

The department’s source water protection program provides grants to community water systems for projects that protect drinking water sources.

"Source water protection is perhaps the easiest and smartest way to enhance the quality of a community’s water supply," said Department of Natural Resources Director Sara Parker Pauley. "By taking common sense measures to keep unwanted contaminants out of drinking water sources, water treatment costs are reduced, which translates into lower costs for consumers."

Water systems use these funds to implement protective measures around their source water areas to guard against known or potential contamination. Projects may include well plugging demonstrations, security measures or education information to promote awareness of source water protection issues.

These grants are funded through set-asides from the Missouri Drinking Water State Revolving Fund. The following 16 public water supplies have been awarded grants for source water protection projects.
