JEFFERSON CITY , MO. JULY 16, 2010 -- Work will begin July 19 to improve the bicycle and walking trail at Watkins Woolen Mill State Park and State Historic Site near Lawson, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources announced today.
Improvements will include the construction of a wooden overlook at the location of the seasonal waterfall and re-alignment of a section of trail. The work will take place on the north end of the 3.8 mile bicycle and walking trail, which circles the lake.
Work is estimated to be completed within four weeks. During construction, the north section of the trail will be closed but the remainder of the trail will remain open.
The total cost of the project $69,952 and is being financed partially with a $48,885 grant through the Recreational Trails Program, a federal grant program funded by the Federal Highway Administration. The remaining costs are funded through the parks, soils and water sales tax and in-kind services from the park.
