JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JULY 6, 2010 -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has issued a construction permit to Kansas City Power and Light for a horizontal expansion of the Montrose Generating Station Utility Waste Landfill.

The landfill will be used to dispose of non-hazardous waste.  This facility is a utility waste landfill located 22 miles east of Highway 71 on Route 18, and 4 miles south on Route P, near Clinton.  The department reviews all applications to ensure solid waste disposal areas are properly designed and constructed.  Other technical factors that protect Missouri’s environment are also examined.  Prior to accepting waste at the facility, an operating permit must also be issued.

Questions and comments regarding the utility waste landfill or the department's role in regulating solid waste sanitary landfills may be sent to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Solid Waste Management Program, P.O. Box 176, Jefferson City, MO  65102-0176 or call Darrell Hartley of the department’s Solid Waste Management Program, at 800-361-4827 or 573-751-5401.
