Public hearing on Central Missouri Landfill expansion set for July 1

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JUNE 11, 2010--The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will host a public hearing July 1 on the draft construction permit for the expansion of the Central Missouri Landfill in Pettis County.

The hearing will be held at 7 p.m. at the Sedalia Municipal Building, 200 S. Osage Ave. 

The public is invited to comment on the draft solid waste disposal area construction permit for Waste Corporation of Missouri to construct a horizontal and vertical expansion of the Central Missouri Landfill in Pettis County.

The proposed Central Missouri Landfill horizontal expansion will be located at 24461 Oak Grove Lane approximately one-fourth mile off Highway 50 about 3 miles west of Sedalia.  The site consists of 171 acres.  The active disposal area is approximately 66 acres.  The proposed expansion will be used for the disposal of municipal solid waste, non-hazardous household, commercial, agricultural, governmental, industrial, construction and demolition wastes.

Citizens can review a copy of the draft solid waste disposal area construction permit at the Sedalia Public Library, 311 W. Third St.   A copy for review is also available upon request at the Solid Waste Management Program Record Center, 1730 E. Elm St., Jefferson City.  Citizens should call 573-751-3043 or fax 573-522-3344 a request to Rhonda Loveall, custodian of records, to arrange a time to review the documents.

The department’s Solid Waste Management Program reviews all applications to ensure solid waste disposal areas are properly designed and constructed.  Other technical factors that protect Missouri’s environment are also examined.

Members of the public can comment on the draft permit and have their comments entered into the official record either in person at the hearing or by submitting them in writing to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Solid Waste Management Program, P.O. Box 176, Jefferson City, MO  65102-0176.   Written comments must be received no later than July 15.
