JEFFERSON CITY, MO, MAY 19, 2010--The Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Solid Waste Management Program will host a public hearing June 3 on the proposed horizontal expansion of the Prairie Valley Landfill near Cuba.

The hearing will be held at 7 p.m. at the Crawford County R-II Elementary School Cafeteria, 1 Wildcat Pride Dr. in Cuba.  This meeting, originally scheduled for May 27, was rescheduled for logistical reasons.

The site is located about 3 miles north of Cuba, east of Highway 19.   The proposed landfill disposal area would be approximately 36 acres, located on a 213-acre site.  The landfill currently has a disposal area of 12 acres on a 22-acre site. The landfill accepts municipal solid waste, non-hazardous household, commercial, agricultural, governmental, industrial, construction and demolition wastes.

The department’s Solid Waste Management Program reviews all application to ensure solid waste disposal areas are properly designed and constructed.  Other technical factors that protect Missouri’s environment also are examined.

Citizens can review a copy of the draft solid waste disposal area construction permit at the Recklein Memorial Branch Library, 305 N. Smith St. in Cuba.

A copy is also available to review upon request at the department’s Solid Waste Management Program Record Center, 1730 East Elm St. in Jefferson City.  Citizens should first call 573-751-3043 or fax a request to Rhonda Loveall, custodian of records at 573-522-3344 to make an appointment to review the file.  Please send questions and comments to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Solid Waste Management Program, P.O.
