Volume 38-179 (For Immediate Release)

MARCH 30, 2010

WHO: Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Director Mark N. Templeton.

WHAT: Media event to discuss an abandoned underground storage tank site addressed as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

WHEN: Thursday, April 1 at 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: Hwy 50, 0.3 miles west of Hwy PP, McGirk in Moniteau County.

WHY: The Department of Natural Resources received funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to address abandoned underground storage tanks, such as those found at former gasoline stations on the corner of many downtowns. Assessing and cleaning up these former properties may make them available for redevelopment for new businesses or the expansion of existing businesses which may create or sustain many jobs throughout the state.

The tanks located in McGirk have been abandoned with no viable responsible party to address the contamination.  The department has hired contractors to assess and clean up the site.  Future redevelopment of the sites can spur the creation of jobs, expand existing businesses, create new businesses and clear the way for communities to redevelop and reuse these properties.
